clip_image002As with any pet, keeping a hamster requires a commitment to care for it during its life which could be 2-3 years or longer. The commitment required includes not only routine feeding, care and time spent with the hamster but also the provision of veterinary treatment if the hamster becomes ill. Although proper care will go a long way to ensuring that any hamster remains happy and healthy there may still be times when veterinary treatment is needed.


 

There are various items of equipment that will be needed for a hamster

 

It is best to buy the essential items of equipment such as a hamster cage, floor covering, nesting material, water bottle and food before getting a hamster, so that the cage is set up and ready for the hamster's arrival.

There are also other optional items that can be provided that will help to entertain the hamster and keep it happy.

clip_image004In the wild hamsters are highly active at dusk and night and may travel several miles as they forage for food. Therefore it is important to provide the largest cage possible for any pet hamster and the provision of an exercise wheel also helps to provide the hamster with a means to exercise whilst in its cage. Another option instead of an exercise wheel is an exercise ball.

Other cage accessories can be placed in a hamster's cage to provide extra stimulation and a more interesting environment for the hamster are:

 

House

clip_image006There are various "houses" available for sale in Pet Shops and a hamster will use these for nesting in. Although all houses sold at Pet Shops are suitable for Dwarf Hamsters, not all are suitable for Syrian Hamsters as the doorways and windows may be too small for some large Syrian Hamsters.

There are various wooden blocks and climbing frames available for hamsters with holes the hamster can travel through.
