Plectranthus Madagascariensis is also known as Coleus Canina, or the pee-off plant! It is an attractive foliage plant which also has a smell abhorrent to cats – thus helping solve the problem of unwanted felines in the garden! Apart from this great characteristic, it’s also a pretty little plant to have for its own sake with its striking grey-green foliage, which gives off a strong aroma especially when brushed against or in the sun. It produces heads of lovely pale blue/purple flowers in summer!
If planted in a container, it can be moved around the garden (an under plate with wheels would surely help here…) thus protecting specific areas from the unwanted attention of cats. Thankfully, it only smells to humans when touched.
For the last three years, it has been proven in Europe as an effective and safe method of keeping cats, dogs and rabbits away from vegetable gardens, flower beds, landscape areas, sandboxes and children’s play areas. It will not harm children or pets and is environmentally safe. Plants should be planted three feet apart, around the areas to be protected.
As a genus, Plectranthus contains more than 350 species of annuals, perennials, and shrubs native to Africa, Asia, and Australia. They generally have succulent or semi-succulent stems. The leaves, too, are often fleshy and frequently oval to heart-shaped. This genus likes moist, well-drained soil and needs to be protected from frost and prolonged dry conditions
Found in Madagascar and southern Africa, this spreading succulent-stemmed perennial has tooth-edged leaves with slight felting on the underside. The white or purple flowers are borne on simple 3 to 8 flowered spikes!
